Antique smocks at the WI's Denman College
I was doing a food shoot for the WI last week at Denman College near Abingdon, and was very struck by these smocks, part of a collection they have of classic old English working smocks. Some of these are originals and some made from the original patterns - all are beautiful. I particularly like the one with red embroidery inside, which was worn by a pall bearer at a funeral at Itchen Abbas in...

Shopping in Lewes
Went to Lewes yesterday afternoon and did a little Christmas shopping despite the wind and rain. These were some of the things I lusted after but didn’t buy - may need a return visit, but not alas for the little antique glass that cost £3000! (Far right in the penultimate pic!) My new Olympus xz1 as delivered by Amazon.
I have been listening out all day for a delivery from Amazon. It’s beautiful weather for once this summer and all the doors and windows are open. We’ve been here all the time and Conker has spent most of the day lying on the terrace sunbathing, and he always barks when the gate us opened. So as it was getting late in the afternoon I was getting anxious that my new camera wasn’t...

Lamb leg steaks with garlicky flageolet beans
We found a new (to us) butcher today. In a residential area of Tonbridge in a small unassuming parade of shops, away from the main town, which we were visiting because Andro had an eye appointment, I discovered Whites. They sell Welsh lamb, Scottish beef, organic pork and poultry, and it all looked wonderful. I bought lamb leg steaks and a beautiful piece of organic pork belly. We had the lamb...

Treats from Starnash Artisan Foods at the South of...
See the full gallery on Posterous I was delighted to find these goodies among all the, no doubt delicious but predictable, chutneys and biscuits in the food tent at the South of England Show at Ardingly, West Sussex. These salamis from Starnash Artisan Foods were I think the best I have ever tasted - and as I love salamis and air dried sausages in general and buy the best I can find, that is...

Small globe artichokes - delicious braised!
We had these for lunch yesterday. I trimmed and halved them, and added them to some pancetta, chopped onions and garlic in a pan and let them cook a little while in olive oil. I then added a glass or so of wine and let that cook down before adding a cup of quinoa, a couple of cups of water with 2 tsps of Marigold vegetable stock and and a teaspoon of honey (to counteract the potential...

Another eggy Swedish breakfast
Such simple tastes perfectly combined. This is one of my favourite breakfasts, now with gluten free crispbread that tends to crumble rather than the really hard dark rye crispbread I prefer, but it’s a fair substitute. The egg should not be overboiled, leaving the middles still moist and it’s nice when it’s still a little warm and the butter underneath melts slightly....

Conker leaping!

Details from my studio, shot on the SLR Magic lens
The light was fading at about 4.00 this afternoon and I was in the studio doing boring, housekeeping things, clearing up from the last shoot, sorting props etc. I suddenly felt I wanted to do something a little more creative so grabbed the little Oly Ep-1 and put  on the Magic lens I got last week, Set at f1.7 and iso 800 I got 1/60th so could hand hold the camera to catch these...

Terrine de Campagne - my simple French style...
Sadly it is almost impossible to find a paté to buy that is free of wheat or maltodextrin, so I can only enjoy one of my favourite treats if I make it myself. Fortunately it is not much effort if you have a strong food processor and the result is so much nicer and cheaper than a shop bought pate that it is a double bonus. This recipe is particularly quick and easy and very adaptable to your own...

Testing the SLR Magic 35mm f1.7 lens on my Olympus...
See the full gallery on posterous This is a quick comparison series using the SLR Magic 35mm f1.7 lens I bought recently. The first two are shot with the Magic, the first at f1.7, and the second stopped down - unfortunately I can’t quite remember how much, and as the lens is manual there is limited EXIF info. The third was shot on the Olympus 14-42mm F3.5-5.6. I love the effect of the...

Our Boxing Day walk on Ashdown Forest
See the full gallery on posterousIt’s become quite a tradition of ours to take our Boxing Day walk on Ashdown Forest. This huge expanse (about 6500 acres) of heathland is one of our favourite places, and of course Conker adores it - lots of other dogs around so lots of good smells and thrilling encounters. It was looking fantastic with sparkling sunshine glinting off the snow...

Pulled pork and beans for burritos
I was responsible for the food for our annual parish lunch last weekend. I’ve done it often before and it’s always been a barbecue, something like boned out lamb shoulder slowly cooked in a Weber or marinaded chicken legs or large prawns on a skewer. All were delicious even if it’s me that’s saying so, but all involved lots of last minute work - seemingly always on a very...

The way they used to store apples
This apple store was on some land belonging to friends of ours, and although the structure is still standing the extraordinary interior, filled with perfectly ventilated trays for apples has been removed. The building was designed for maximum insulation to keep the temperature consistent summer and winter and needed a constant flow of air through it, and the thatched exterior, roof and walls and...

A light and easy lunch for guests
When we have people coming for a meal and I have more time to shop than to cook this is my staple. The beautiful Icelandic cod loin that we can now buy from the counters of most good supermarkets is the basis of this dish, and then add some pretty cherry tomatoes on the vine, some black olives and some capers, a sprinkling of salt and good fresh ground pepper, and sprig or two of thyme....

How to hold a chicken
Another topic on our small holders training day at Moons Green farm was on poultry, on how to look after them, feed and house them, and how to handle them. Roast tomatoes with goats' cheese recipe
This is such a simple lunch dish and yet it evokes all the flavours of the Mediterranean and suddenly you can imagine yourself in Provence in a shady square wih a tumbler of rosé. ● 2 firm large beef tomatoes, continental type ● sugar to dust ● Freshly ground black pepper ● 2 tbsp olive oil ● 1 small onion, skinned and very finely chopped ● 1 garlic cloves, skinned and crushed ● 6 anchovy...
